Alexicom Tech's AAC system was created by speech-language pathologists, parents of an AAC user, and a computer programmer. It is virtually impossible to predict what any one individual would want to say at any given moment. However, to is imperative that every person's wants, needs, thoughts, and opinions can be heard. Alexicom Tech's LanguageMaker series (ChildPre through ChildIntermediate) was developed to follow Brown's stages of language development. The first page set in this series, ChildPre, introduces single words. As the page sets in this series progress, they are organized to make word combinations easily accessible (i.e. action + object, article +object, pronoun + action). The number of cells as well as the number of page links increase through the series, just as vocabulary increases as one develops language. All stages of this series include links to "core" vocabulary and the later sets further include grammatical morphemes (i.e. past/present/ future verb tenses). This creates ease of communication through less "hits" required to express a message. The vocabulary is also organized, as much as possible, into categories or familiar objects for better comprehension of navigation. Some categories require personalization, such as "activities", however, we have created many pre-made pages for people to use as they see fit. We provide phrases to initiate communication, such as "I'm hungry," and individual vocabulary, so that a user can make a novel phrase. The reasoning behind this was based on input from AAC users and from SLPs, who strive to make communication fast, yet teach syntax and semantics at these different language stage levels.
